What is a safe space and what does it mean to me?
A safe space is an inclusive and supportive place/ space for people to express themselves freely without the fear of oppression. Safe space allows people to come together, share experiences and to heal.
A safe space to me means being heard. It is a space where people like me come together. I find comfort in these spaces because, for example; if I share my experiences, I know that I am not the only one. Being in a safe space allowed me to feel understood and validated. A safe space can bring a sense of belonging.
How can I create a safe space for students?
Teaching placement starting – I am nervous and I don’t know what to expect, but considering my own experience as a student, I sort of have an idea of what to do.
We have our own perspectives of teaching and understanding but that shouldn’t restrict your students. It is important to understand the students individually – this makes the students feel heard (encouraging students to find their voice), and the teaching should be student-centred. Simple questions such as ‘Is this how you see your work’ and hearing is very important. This is not in my comfort zone so it will be challenging for me, but I will work on it! I will not be able to understand all of the students’ subjects but I need to understand that I am also learning.
Importantly, encourage students to consider their positionality!
While I must consider my lived experience and beliefs, I should not interfere with/ dismiss others’ voices.
Non- Euro-centric resources should be encouraged!
Professional boundaries [Considerations]
- Communicating what my expectations/ tolerance are in regards to behaviours in the academic setting.
- Giving students information about UAL wellbeing support.
- Sensitive information is not being shared.
- Communicating my levels of contact – availability, how to contact me
- No preferential treatment given. Ensuring that the learning environment is inclusive – listening to students’ ideas without any bias or judgement.
