As I had stopped learning to read, I am struggling to understand paragraphs with [for me] new vocabulary. Therefore this post will be where I will define/ note key terms to which I can keep coming back. This post will keep on being updated as I read further resources.
- Stratification: Arrangement/ classifying/ categorising into different groups. For e.g; social stratification means categorising people into groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, education, etc.
- Social Justice: Social justice means fighting for injustices and inequalities. Social justice is to acknowledge that everyone deserves equal opportunities and that we all are/ remain fair. It is about developing self-awareness of inequalities in society that varies in: access to resources, privileges within society, education, healthcare, economic opportunities and political policies.
- White fragility: when a white person’s identity is confronted and challenged they feel threatened/ triggered. This often is caused by their belief in ‘being the superior race’.
- Micro affirmation: acknowledging and recognising an individual. Although a small gesture, it is a sign of inclusion making them feel valid and seen.
- Safe space: An inclusive and supportive place/ space for people to express themselves freely without the fear of oppression. Safe space allows people to come together, share their experiences and to heal.
- Positionality: It is how your identity influences your understanding and views of the world. This also means that it can be biased as well.
- Formative assessment: It is developmental and supportive – you will receive an indication of what grade you will get, but this doesn’t count in/as your final grade.
- Summative assessment: In this assessment, you will receive a final grade from evaluating and reflecting on your work. This grade will be counted.
- Meritocratic: Power selected/ given to people on the basis of their merit.
- Morrill Land-Grant Acts: Land- Grant college act in where Native Americans were dispossessed from their land and instead those lands were taken to build local infrastructures. For example; public universities.
- Settler colonial: Replacement of indigenous population by stealing their land, erasure of the population for settlement.
- Deregulation: Removal of restrictions and regulations in a specific industry.
- Intercultural Dialogue: An open and respectable exchange between organisations, individuals with different cultural backgrounds/ views. Its aim is to foster and encourage understanding of diverse perspectives/ practices/ voices.
- Racism: Racism is discrimination/ prejudice against an individual/ community based on their race or ethnicity. Racism is about treating/ viewing one as inferior while believing/practising a ‘racial hierarchy.
- Anti-racism: Anti-racism for me is to oppose racism. This means actively challenging racism by recognising and committing to stand up against prejudices. It is about unlearning your own beliefs and actions. It is about learning and understanding the critical need for anti-racism as it will have positive impacts on the society
- Unconscious bias: unfairly treating a person or a group of people because of the deeply ingrained judgements, attitudes and stereotypes rooted in the environment, upbringings, experiences, etc.
- Bias: unfairly treating a person or a group because of their personal beliefs/ prejudice.
- Microaggressions: Othering individuals (marginalised community) through comments or actions that are prejudiced/reinforce stereotypes. For example; because I am South Asian whenever I speak English, I get compliments for speaking ‘good’ English.
- Transferable skills: Skills and knowledge that you gain through the experience from work, education or life that can be used in other fields/ developing careers.
- Exclusionary: The act of excluding people from participating/ joining in.
- Reflection: Considerations and thoughts about their belief and ideas. Reflection can be processed in any medium – such as; written, recording, etc.
